Details of Anak Krakatau Volcano Eruption.

The Anak Krakatau volcano is erupting again. Less than two years after an eruption that triggered a deadly tsunami, Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau volcano is putting on a display once again.

Webcam and satellite footage captured the eruption that started Friday night, sending lava and rock skyward after a period of relative calm.

Indonesia’s volcanology office reports that the volcano has been active since the beginning of the year, but mostly just spewing steam and gas up until April 10 when lava began making it to the surface again.

Social media and some media reports are filled with photos and video of spectacular lava fountains and lightning exploding from the top of the volcanic island, but that footage is actually from the 2018 eruption.

Indonesian authorities have issued an orange alert for aviation in the area, reporting a volcanic ash cloud extending over 2,000 feet into the air.

Anak Krakatau means “child of Krakatau” and is an island that emerged in the early 20th century from the caldera which was formed by the massive and legendary eruption of Krakatau (also known as Krakatoa) in 1883. The island continued to grow volcanically until it collapsed in the 2018 eruption.
