Michel Platini, a former French football player and manager, and the president of the Union of European Football Associations(UEFA) has announced he will run to replace Sepp Blatter as Fifa president.

After receiving indications of support from four continental confederations at the 2018 World Cup draw in St Petersburg last weekend, Michael Platini is set to run and clinch the top job.
Platini who is very confident he has the necessary support to win has this to say;
“This was a very personal, carefully considered decision, one in which I weighed up the future of football alongside my own future. I was also guided by the esteem, support and encouragement that many of you have shown me,” Platini said in a statement, having written to all 209 member associations of Fifa to inform them of his intentions to stand.
“There are times in life when you have to take your destiny into your own hands. I am at one of those decisive moments, at a juncture in my life and in events that are shaping the future of Fifa.”
However, major contender to Sepp Blatter in the last FIFA election, Prince Ali who could also contest in the forthcoming election has criticized Platini’s declaration saying that “Platini is not good for Fifa” and that “Football’s fans and players deserve better.”
In a statement issued by Prince Ali, he promised to stop “the practice of back-room, under-the-table deals”. He also stated: “What is clear is that Fifa needs new, independent leadership, untainted by the practices of the past.”
Prince Ali bin Hussein is the third son of King Hussein of Jordan, and the President of the Jordan Football Association. He is also the founder and president of the West Asian Football Federation. Under his presidency the membership has increased to 13 countries.
